Here are some of the events for which I’ve had the opportunity to be the sound tech:
Who: YoungLife of the Upper Valley
What: Community Dinner
When: April 3rd, 2006
Where: Fireside Inn and Suites, West Lebanon, NH
Last year we used two projectors and screens, due to the wide layout of the room. It worked well. For the same reason, we also used four EV100s (one on each side of each screen) which evened out the volume around the room pretty well.
This year, I’m hoping we can rotate the room 90 degrees — I don’t know that we’re going to be able to find two matching projectors (the company that provided them last year has gone out of business), and I’d prefer not to have to borrow speakers again (I only have two EV100s).
Otherwise, the setup was pretty simple, with a few musicians providing background music during dinner, and a few wireless mics for the speakers (handheld and lav).
Who: Campus Crusade for Christ, Northeast Region
What: Mission U (Northeast Regional Winter Conference)
When: February 6th-8th, 2004
Where: Rhode Island Convention Center, Providence, RI
This was my first opportunity to run sound for a larger event (roughly 1,000 attendees, including students and staff), and it was quite exciting. Unlike most of my prior experiences, A/V was run by a team of people, each of whom was highly proficient in his role.
The A/V was provided by BAV Services, who subcontracted the sound equipment from Unistage, both of which are based out of Buffalo, NY. The mixing desk was a Midas Heritage 1000, which gave me a great opportunity to practice many of the theory and techniques I had learned on the CSC list that just weren’t possible on a Mackie 1604. Also included were a variety of Shure wireless mics, plus Countryman E6 headsets. And a lot of road cases!
Both BAV and Unistage were wonderful to work with. It was the first time I had come across an A/V company that provided techs whose sole purpose was to watch over the equipment and help wherever needed, but not necessarily to run it. My prior experience with such companies went roughly like this — “You will touch this equipment over my dead body, and then only with prior written permission and union clearance.” This gave me an entirely new perspective on the customer service aspect of sound reinforcement companies, as well as a higher goal to achieve. I’ll happily work with either company again, hopefully including future winter conferences.
Who: Care Net Pregnancy Center of the Upper Valley
What: Banquet
When: September 18th, 2003
Where: American Legion Hall, White River Junction, VT
This was my second year doing this banquet, and it went very well. I handled all aspects of the sound system, which included delayed speakers, three wireless channels for (primarily) speech reinforcement, a band, and background music. I also “consulted” with the video, to help them get that set up. This was my first opportunity to use my expanded portable rig in a live setting, and I was very pleased with how it sounded, and how easy it was to set up. There were approximately 440 people in attendance.
Who: Valley Bible Church
What: Sunday services, plus other events
When: Nearly Every Sunday, ~Jan. 2002 - Present
Where: White River Junction
From week to week, this is my main opportunity to run sound for a larger group than myself and my wife. The band varies quite a bit from week to week, but generally consists of a piano, one or more guitars, a bass, electric drums, and several vocalists.
Who: Campus Crusade for Christ, Dartmouth College
What: Weekly Meeting
When: ~Jan. 2000 - Jun. 2002
Where: Tindle Lounge, Thayer Dining Hall, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH
This is where I first got interested in doing sound. More details can be found on my history page. The group generally consisted of two guitars, a bass, and three or four vocals. Only the music was reinforced — the room was small enough that speech didn’t need to be reinforced, although since it was adjacent to a dining hall, it would have been helpful often enough. As we were striving for a more intimate atmosphere, that won out.
I’ll be working on this list as time permits (and as I get more experience). These are just a sampling of what I’ve been doing over the past few years.
